The Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad (NC&StL) was originally chartered as the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad in 1845. Construction of the 125-mile route between the two cities took over 9 years and had to conquer several steep grades and deep valleys. The fact that modern-day CSX still uses much of this original line is a testament to the engineering done over 150 years ago! While both cities are in Tennessee, the route serpentined through Alabama and Georgia to avoid impassable mountains. The railroad was completed just in time for the Civil War and was strategic to both sides.
The N&C reincorporated under the name NC&StL in 1873 after acquiring several northerly branch lines. The L&N launched a successful hostile stock takeover in 1870 but the railroads operated separately until 1957 when the L&N was merged into the ACL. The NC&StL was an innovative line, being an early adopter of diesel motive power and operating the first radio-controlled unmanned switcher (a GE 44 ton loco) used for moving hopper cars.

This hefty hauler is 11 1/8" long and features die-cast sprung trucks, couplers and frame, a metal brake wheel, opening doors, and an 0-27 minimum operating radius.
